The tradeoffs are the usual ones — synthetic is lighter, kinder to hands, and stores far less snap-back energy; steel resists abrasion and costs less — but the Crew adds a consideration the solo machines don't have: there are usually people around this machine. Synthetic's gentler failure behavior is worth real money when the passengers waiting out a recovery are your family, which is why the grid runs 60/40 synthetic and climbing. Match the fairlead (roller for steel, hawse for synthetic); switching later is a stocked swap in winch accessories.
Use the crew — that's the Crew's recovery advantage. A six-seat machine comes with its own rigging team: one person spotting with a wireless remote while the driver holds the wheel is the safest recovery setup there is, and extra hands make snatch-block rigging — doubling your effective pull and redirecting around obstacles — a two-minute job instead of a solo wrestling match. Run the real number: the common recovery rule is capacity at least 1.5× the load, and a Crew's load is machine plus passengers plus whatever's in the bed — the heaviest total in the Ranger family. That's why 4,500 lb is the sensible floor for a Crew that recovers itself, and 5,000–6,000 earns its price the day the cab is full and the mud is deeper than it looked. Plow-only or loading duty: the 2,500–3,500 class handles the task at workhorse prices.
Q: What's a bed winch, and why would a Crew want one? A winch mounted in the cargo box facing rearward, for pulling loads UP into the bed — a field-dressed deer, a dead ATV, equipment on a ramp. Q: Does the winch come with a mount for my Crew? Usually not — the plate is model-specific (a Crew XP 1000 mount isn't a Crew 570 mount), and it lives in winch accessories unless the kit says otherwise.
